Christ in 2 Kings

Silence and stillness before God (2 minutes)
Scripture reading
Scripture reading:
2 Kings 2:9–10

“When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, ‘Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken from you?’ ‘Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit,’ Elisha replied. ‘You have asked a difficult thing,’ Elijah said, ‘yet if you see me when I am taken from you, it will be yours — otherwise, it will not.’”

Devotional

The passing of the prophetic mantle from Elijah to Elisha is a moment of both grief and hope. Elisha’s request for a “double portion” isn’t greed — it’s the language of inheritance, asking to carry forward Elijah’s ministry with the fullness of God’s Spirit.

God grants this request, showing that His purposes are not bound to one person. His work continues from generation to generation, often in fresh and surprising ways.

For us, this points to the promise of the Spirit poured out at Pentecost. In Jesus, we receive the presence and power of God not in a limited measure, but abundantly, to equip us for the ministry He calls us to.

Question to consider

What “inheritance” of faith or ministry has God entrusted to you to carry forward?

Prayer

Lord, thank you for those who have gone before me in faith. Fill me with your Spirit to serve you faithfully. Help me carry your work into the next season with courage. Amen.
