Christ in 1 Kings

Silence and stillness before God (2 minutes)
Scripture reading
Scripture reading:
1 Kings 18:38–39

“Then the fire of the Lord fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench. When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, ‘The Lord — he is God! The Lord — he is God!’”

Devotional

On Mount Carmel, Elijah stands against the prophets of Baal in a dramatic contest. After hours of futile shouting and cutting from the false prophets, Elijah prays a simple prayer — and fire falls from heaven. The people are left in no doubt: the Lord is the true God.

This moment reveals the futility of idols and the unmatched power of God. It also shows that God’s work is not dependent on human theatrics or volume; His power is revealed through His word and sovereign action.

In Christ, we see God’s decisive victory over all false gods. The cross and the resurrection declare to the world, “The Lord — He is God!” and call us to wholehearted allegiance.

Question to consider

Are there any “idols” in your life that compete for your worship?

Prayer

Lord, you alone are God. Expose the idols that pull my heart away from you. Draw me back to worship you alone. Amen.
