Silence and stillness before God (2 minutes)
Scripture reading
Scripture reading:
1 Kings 19:11–12

“Then a great and powerful wind tore through the mountains… but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake… but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire… but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.”

Devotional

After the triumph on Mount Carmel, Elijah finds himself afraid, exhausted, and ready to give up. God meets him in a surprising way — not in dramatic displays of power, but in a gentle whisper.

This teaches us something vital about God’s character. He is not limited to the spectacular; often, He works in the quiet, unseen moments. His voice is not always thunder; sometimes it’s the softest nudge in our spirit.

In Jesus, we see the same truth. The Kingdom came not with military might, but with the humble arrival of a baby in Bethlehem. God’s ways often overturn our expectations — and His whisper can be more powerful than any earthquake.

Question to consider

Where might God be speaking to you in a “gentle whisper” today?

Prayer

Lord, help me to hear your voice in the quiet. Still my heart so I can recognise your leading. Teach me to trust your gentle ways. Amen.
