Christ in Obadiah

Silence and stillness before God (2 minutes)
Scripture reading
Scripture reading:
Obadiah 1:10–11

"Because of the violence against your brother Jacob, you will be covered with shame; you will be destroyed forever. On the day you stood aloof while strangers carried off his wealth and foreigners entered his gates and cast lots for Jerusalem, you were like one of them."

Devotional

Edom’s guilt was not only in what they did, but in what they failed to do. They stood by as Jerusalem suffered, watching without helping, treating their brother’s pain as someone else’s problem.

God calls His people to act with compassion, not indifference. The parable of the Good Samaritan reminds us that true neighbour-love crosses boundaries and steps into the need of others — even when it’s costly.

Jesus is the ultimate neighbour. He did not stand aloof from our suffering, but entered it fully, bearing our shame to bring us salvation. His love compels us to reject apathy and to step into the brokenness around us with mercy and courage.

Question to consider

Who around you might need you to step in rather than stand back?

Prayer

Lord, forgive me for the times I’ve stood by in silence. Fill me with Your compassion for those in need. Make me ready to act in love. Amen.
