“Then the king called together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem. He went up to the temple of the Lord… He read in their hearing all the words of the Book of the Covenant… The king stood by his pillar and renewed the covenant in the presence of the Lord — to follow the Lord and keep his commands…”
King Josiah’s reforms were sparked by the rediscovery of God’s Word. Hearing it read moved him to lead the whole nation in covenant renewal. The Word of God is powerful. When we read it, it confronts us, calls us back to the Lord, and renews our hearts. It doesn’t simply inform; it transforms.
Through Jesus, we are called into a new covenant, written not on tablets of stone but on our hearts by the Spirit. Each time we open Scripture, God invites us afresh to walk closely with Him.
How has God’s Word recently called you back to deeper obedience?
Lord, thank you for the gift of your Word. Let it shape my heart and renew my faith. Help me to walk in the covenant of your grace. Amen.
