“Hear this, you elders; listen, all who live in the land. Has anything like this ever happened in your days or in the days of your ancestors? Tell it to your children, and let your children tell it to their children, and their children to the next generation.”
Joel begins his prophecy with urgency — a disaster unlike anything before has struck the land. The devastation of the locust swarm was not to be forgotten but remembered and passed on through the generations. God’s people were to treat this moment as a spiritual wake-up call.
When crisis comes, we often just want to move past it. But Joel insists that God’s people must pay attention, reflect, and pass down the lessons learned. The devastation was not meaningless — it was meant to draw the nation back to God in humility and repentance.
In Christ, we learn to see even our hardest seasons through the lens of redemption. The cross itself looked like utter devastation — the end of hope — yet it became the beginning of new life. Our calling, like Joel’s hearers, is to remember God’s works and to pass on the story of His mercy and salvation to the next generation.
