Scripture reading
Scripture reading:
1 Kings 3:9

“So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?”

Devotional

When Solomon ascends to the throne, God gives him a stunning invitation: “Ask for whatever you want me to give you.” His request is not for wealth, long life, or victory in battle, but for wisdom to govern well.

This prayer reflects a heart that recognises dependence on God. Solomon knew the weight of the task before him and that wisdom was essential for leading God’s people. His humility pleased the Lord, who granted him wisdom and more besides.

For us, the New Testament tells us to ask God for wisdom without doubting, and He will give generously (James 1:5). In Christ, we have not just wisdom for leadership, but for all of life — a wisdom that is pure, peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit.

Question to consider

Where do you most need God’s wisdom in your life right now?

Prayer

Lord, you are the source of all wisdom. Give me a discerning heart to follow your ways. Let your truth guide me. Amen.
