Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.
Paul closes with both assurance and exhortation. Those who belong to Christ have crucified the flesh, our old life has been nailed to the cross. We are new creations, alive in the Spirit.
But life in the Spirit is not automatic. Paul calls us to “keep in step with the Spirit.” Like walking in rhythm with a guide, we are to match our steps with His. This requires attentiveness, humility, and obedience.
The warning is clear: conceit, provocation, and envy fracture community. The Spirit’s fruit, by contrast, unites. To keep in step with Him is to walk in love, serving one another, reflecting Christ’s character. This is the freedom we have been given, not to serve ourselves, but to be fruitful in Him.
What practices help you keep in step with the Spirit day by day?
Spirit of God, thank you that you have made me alive in Christ. Teach me to keep in step with you, to crucify the flesh, and to walk in love and humility.
