But the fruit of the Spirit is love…
Love is first in the list, and rightly so. It is not just one fruit among many but the root from which all the others grow. Paul has already said that the law is fulfilled in the command to “love your neighbour as yourself.” Now he shows that this love is produced by the Spirit.
This is not shallow affection or mere tolerance. It is agapē—self-giving, sacrificial, Christlike love. This love serves others in freedom, builds unity, and reflects the very heart of God.
We cannot manufacture this love by effort alone. It is the Spirit’s gift, poured into our hearts (Romans 5:5). When the Spirit fills us, love overflows—not as duty but as delight. This is the love that turns freedom into service and conflict into community.
Where do you need the Spirit to grow deeper love for others in your life right now?
God of love, thank you for pouring your love into my heart through your Spirit. Grow in me a love that reflects Christ, serving others in freedom and humility.
