For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.
Paul describes the Christian life honestly: it is a battlefield. Within us, the flesh and the Spirit are at odds. The flesh represents our old, sinful nature; the Spirit represents God’s new life within us. These forces pull in opposite directions, leaving us in tension.
This conflict explains why the Christian life is not easy. Even with the Spirit, we still feel the tug of temptation. But this battle is a sign of life, the Spirit is active within us, resisting the flesh. If there were no struggle, it would mean the Spirit was absent.
The good news is that the Spirit is stronger. Though we may stumble, the Spirit leads us forward. Our freedom in Christ is not the absence of struggle but the presence of His power in the midst of it.
Where do you feel the pull between flesh and Spirit most strongly? How can you invite the Spirit’s help in that battle today?
Lord, thank you that your Spirit lives within me. In the conflict between flesh and Spirit, give me strength to follow your way. Help me not to rely on myself but on your power.
