Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? … No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Paul’s crescendo rises into one of the greatest declarations in Scripture: nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ. He lists every conceivable power, trouble, hardship, persecution, even death itself, and then declares them powerless to sever us from Christ’s love.
Notice that Paul does not promise we will avoid hardship. Trouble and danger are real. But he promises that in all these things, we are “more than conquerors.” Not because we are strong, but because Christ’s love is unstoppable. His love holds us through suffering, sustains us in trial, and secures us for eternity.
This is the bedrock of Christian assurance. Nothing, no force in heaven or earth, no present fear or future threat, can undo what God has done in Christ. His love is everlasting, unshakable, invincible. To rest in this love is to find peace that cannot be taken away.
What fear or circumstance do you need to bring under the truth that nothing can separate you from God’s love in Christ?
Father, thank you that nothing can separate me from your love in Christ. Anchor my heart in this assurance, and help me to live as more than a conqueror through Him who loves me.
