For what the law was powerless to do because it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in the flesh.
The law was good, it revealed God’s will and pointed to holiness. But it was powerless to save us. Why? Because it was weakened by the flesh. Our sinful nature meant that the law could only expose sin, not cure it. It was like a mirror that showed the dirt on our face but could not wash it away.
What the law could not do, God did. He sent His Son in the likeness of sinful flesh. Jesus took on our humanity, entered our condition, and came not merely as a teacher but as a sacrifice. On the cross, He became a sin offering, bearing the weight of our rebellion. There, sin was condemned so that we would not be.
This is the great reversal. Instead of us being condemned for our sin, sin itself is condemned in Christ. God did not relax His justice; He fulfilled it in His Son. The result is freedom for us, not because the law has changed, but because Christ has fulfilled it.
How does it deepen your gratitude to know that what you could never do, God has done for you in Christ?
Father, thank you that you did what the law could not do. Thank you for sending your Son to take my place. Help me to rest in His finished work and live in the joy of your salvation.
