But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness.
Here Paul acknowledges a tension: our bodies remain subject to death, but our inner life has been made alive through Christ. Sin has left its mark on the human body; mortality remains our reality. Yet death does not have the last word. The Spirit gives life because of righteousness.
This righteousness is not our own but Christ’s. Because His righteousness has been credited to us, the Spirit brings new life within us. The presence of the Spirit now is a foretaste of the resurrection to come. Though our bodies decay, our spirits are alive in Christ.
This perspective reshapes how we face ageing, sickness, or weakness. The body may fade, but the Spirit sustains us. Even as death seems to advance, life in Christ deepens. What looks like decline is actually the prelude to glory.
How does the Spirit’s life within you give hope as you face the reality of mortality?
Lord Jesus, though my body is subject to death, your Spirit gives me life. Help me to face weakness and ageing with hope, knowing that your righteousness sustains me.
