You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ.
Paul shifts from the bleak reality of life in the flesh to the astonishing truth of life in the Spirit. “You, however…” marks the great contrast. For those in Christ, the Spirit dwells within. This is not a distant influence but an indwelling presence. The Spirit makes His home in us.
This verse also makes something clear: belonging to Christ and having the Spirit are inseparable. There is no such thing as a Christian without the Spirit. To be in Christ is to be in the Spirit; to have the Spirit is to belong to Christ. The Spirit Himself is the seal of our identity as God’s children.
This truth gives both comfort and challenge. Comfort, because you are never alone, the Spirit dwells in you always. Challenge, because life in the Spirit leaves no room for the flesh to reign. If He lives in us, then we are called to live by Him, to honour His presence, and to reflect His character.
How does knowing that the Spirit dwells in you change the way you think about your identity and daily choices?
Holy Spirit, thank you that you live in me. Help me to honour your presence in my life, to trust your power, and to walk in the reality of belonging to Christ.
