Because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.
Paul contrasts two “laws” at work: the law of sin and death, and the law of the Spirit of life. The law of sin and death describes the old reality, our fallen condition, bound to sin’s power, resulting inevitably in death. But through Christ, a new principle now governs our lives: the Spirit of life.
The Spirit brings freedom. Where sin enslaved us, the Spirit liberates us. Where death threatened us, the Spirit breathes resurrection life. The Spirit is not merely an influence or a feeling but the very presence of God dwelling in us, applying the work of Christ and leading us into newness of life.
This means that the Christian life is not about gritting our teeth to keep the law by our own strength. It is about walking in the Spirit, who sets us free from the cycle of failure and death. What once held us captive no longer has the final say. We are under a new authority—the Spirit of life.
What does it mean for you to live under the “law of the Spirit of life” instead of the “law of sin and death”?
Holy Spirit, thank you for setting me free from sin and death. Help me to live each day in your power and not in my own strength. Fill me with your life that I may walk in freedom.
