“Take my yoke upon you…”
Jesus offers rest—and then He offers a yoke. At first that sounds surprising. A yoke was a wooden beam placed across animals so they could work under the direction of their master. In the Jewish world, a yoke could also describe submitting yourself to a teacher and his instruction.
Jesus is inviting us into discipleship. His rest is found as we place our lives under His leadership. There will always be something shaping us. Ambition has a yoke. Approval has a yoke. Money has a yoke. Fear has a yoke. Our culture has a yoke. The expectations of others can have a yoke.
Jesus says: Take my yoke. Allow Me to lead you. Allow Me to teach you how to live. Allow My priorities to become yours. There is deep rest in surrender.
Trying to remain lord of our own lives is exhausting. We must predict everything, manage everything, protect everything and somehow make everything work. Jesus invites us to surrender the control room. He becomes Lord. We become disciples. And strangely, under the yoke of Christ, the soul begins to breathe again.

Lord Jesus, I willingly place my life under Your leadership. Shape my priorities, decisions, relationships and desires. Teach me the freedom of living beneath Your gracious rule. Amen.
