“For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
We finish where Jesus finishes. A yoke. A burden. And surprisingly, Jesus describes them as easy and light. The word translated easy carries the sense of something good, kind or well-fitting. Jesus is not promising a life without difficulty. Following Him can involve sacrifice, obedience, courage and even carrying a cross. Yet the yoke fits because the One whose yoke we carry is good. We are walking with Jesus.
For ten days we have listened to His invitation: Come to me. Bring your weariness. Bring your burdens. Receive My rest. Take My yoke. Learn from Me. Discover My gentleness. Learn My humility. Find rest for your soul.
This is a beautiful picture of the Christian life. We come to Christ empty-handed. We remain close to Him. We allow Him to teach us. We increasingly place the weight of our lives into His hands. There will still be responsibilities tomorrow. There will still be problems to solve, people to love, work to do and crosses to carry. But we carry them differently. We carry them with Christ.
Perhaps that is the great invitation of Matthew 11:28–30. You were never meant to carry your whole life alone. Jesus is near. His heart is gentle. His leadership is good. His grace is sufficient. And His invitation remains open: Come to me.
After spending these ten days in Matthew 11:28–30, what is the one invitation from Jesus that you most need to carry into the next season of your life?
Lord Jesus, I come to You. I bring You my weariness and my burdens. I receive Your rest. I take Your yoke. I choose again to learn from You. Thank You that You are gentle and humble in heart. Teach me to walk through life close to You, trusting You with the weight I was never meant to carry alone. Amen.
