“…and you will find rest for your souls.”
Some tiredness sits beneath the surface. The body may be functioning. The diary may be manageable. Life may even look successful. Yet the soul can still be weary. Jesus speaks directly to that place. “You will find rest for your souls.”
His words echo an ancient invitation in Jeremiah 6:16, where God’s people are called to walk in the good way and “find rest for your souls.” Human beings were created to live with God. Our deepest rest therefore has a relational centre. Augustine captured the idea centuries later when he described the human heart as restless until it finds its rest in God.
There are many good things that refresh us: sleep, holidays, exercise, laughter, friendship and quiet. Receive them gratefully. But ultimately the soul needs God Himself. We need the assurance that we are forgiven. We need the security of being loved. We need a purpose larger than ourselves. We need hope beyond death. We need the presence of Christ. These are deep places of rest.
Perhaps today Jesus is inviting you beneath the surface. Your schedule may need rest. Your body may need rest. And your soul may need to come home to Jesus again.
If your soul could speak honestly today, what would it say that it needs from Jesus?
Jesus, bring Your rest into the deepest places of my life. Restore what has become depleted. Quiet what has become anxious. Remind me that I am forgiven, loved and held securely in You. Amen.
