“…and I will give you rest.”
Notice the promise. Jesus says: “I will give you rest.” Rest is something Christ gives. The Bible’s story is filled with the theme of rest. God rests after creation. Israel receives Sabbath. The Promised Land is described as a place of rest. Psalm 23 pictures the Shepherd leading His sheep beside quiet waters. All those images point toward something humanity deeply needs.
A soul can be busy even when the body is sitting still. Thoughts continue racing. Problems replay. Tomorrow is rehearsed. Yesterday is revisited. Jesus offers a deeper rest—the security of placing our lives into His hands. This does not mean every difficult circumstance immediately changes. Jesus Himself lived an extraordinarily demanding life. Yet His life was anchored in trust toward His Father.
Christian rest grows from knowing who holds us. Our salvation rests on Christ. Our identity rests in Christ. Our future rests with Christ. Our lives are held by Christ. There is enormous freedom in remembering that the universe does not depend upon us. God remains God while we sleep. Christ remains Lord while we rest. Perhaps today you can receive rest as a gift rather than something you must somehow achieve.
What keeps your soul restless at present, and what might it look like to entrust that concern to Christ?
Jesus, You promise rest to those who come to You. Quiet the noise within me. Teach me to trust Your care, Your wisdom and Your sovereignty. I receive Your rest today. Amen.
