“…all you who are weary and burdened…”
Everyone carries something. Some burdens come with being human. Work, family, finances, ageing, uncertainty and responsibility all have weight. Some burdens come through suffering. Some are created by other people. And some burdens we quietly place upon ourselves.
Expectations can become heavy. The need to succeed can become heavy. Regret can become heavy. Trying to control outcomes can become heavy.
Jesus originally spoke these words in a world where religious leaders could also make faith feel burdensome. Later in Matthew, Jesus described teachers who “tie up heavy, cumbersome loads” and place them on other people’s shoulders. Religion itself can become exhausting when we imagine that God’s acceptance must constantly be earned. Into that world Jesus says: Come to me. He knows exactly how much the human soul can carry.
Today, imagine arriving before Christ with a heavy backpack. Inside it are all the things you have been carrying. Now begin naming them. This responsibility. This fear. This person. This disappointment. This unanswered prayer. This thing I cannot control. You may discover that some things still need to be carried tomorrow. But you do not carry them alone. Jesus invites burdened people into His presence.
What burden have you been carrying that you need to deliberately place before Jesus today?
Lord Jesus, You know every burden I carry. I place before You the things that are weighing upon me. Give me wisdom for what is mine to carry and grace to release what belongs to You. Amen.
