“…and humble in heart…”
The most powerful person who ever walked the earth described Himself as humble in heart. Jesus possessed nothing to prove. He knew where He had come from. He knew who His Father was. He knew His mission. He could therefore stoop. He welcomed children. He touched lepers. He washed feet. He ate with outsiders. Eventually He humbled Himself even to the cross.
Humility flows from a secure identity. Much of our inner exhaustion comes from continually managing how we appear to others. We compare. We defend. We compete. We wonder what people think.
Jesus shows another way. He could serve because He knew who He was.
The gospel gives us that same foundation. We are loved by God. We belong to Christ. Our lives are held by grace. We no longer need every room to revolve around us. Humility allows us to listen. To apologise. To serve unnoticed. To celebrate someone else’s success. To admit that we do not know. To let another person go first.
There is surprising rest in humility because the humble person can finally stop performing. Jesus says: Learn from me.
Where might Jesus be inviting you to choose humility today?
Lord Jesus, You are gentle and humble in heart. Free me from the need to impress, defend or promote myself. Ground my identity deeply in Your love and teach me the freedom of humility. Amen.
