"Come to me..."
Christianity begins with an invitation—come. Jesus does not begin by giving exhausted people another task. He invites them to Himself.
There is something wonderfully personal about those words. Jesus could have said, “Come to the truth.” He could have said, “Come to the kingdom.” He could have given them another religious system to master. Instead He says: “Come to me.”
At the heart of Christian faith is a Person. We can easily forget this. Faith can gradually become a collection of beliefs, responsibilities, church activities and Christian habits. All of those have their place, but Jesus continually draws us back to Himself. Come to me.
The invitation is wonderfully simple. You do not have to become impressive before you come. You do not have to solve everything first. You come carrying whatever you are carrying.
Perhaps that is the invitation you need today. Before you solve the problem, make the decision, answer the email, carry the responsibility or worry about tomorrow, hear Jesus say: Come to me. The Christian life begins there. And remarkably, it continues there too.
What would it mean for you to intentionally come to Jesus today rather than simply carrying on with everything yourself?
Lord Jesus, thank You that You invite me to come to You. Draw my heart toward You today. Before all the demands and responsibilities of my life, help me simply to come. Amen.
