“…and learn from me…”
Jesus does more than forgive us. He teaches us how to live. A disciple is a learner—someone who increasingly takes on the life, priorities and character of their teacher.
That makes the words “learn from me” enormously significant. Jesus is saying: Watch Me. Listen to Me. Walk with Me. Learn how I respond to people. Learn how I pray. Learn what I value. Learn what I do with power. Learn how I respond to opposition. Learn how I love.
Christian maturity grows through a lifetime of learning Christ.
Sometimes we approach Jesus primarily for answers. We want Him to explain the problem, open the door, heal the situation or show us what to do next. Those prayers matter.
But beneath them is an even greater invitation: “Jesus, teach me to become like You.” The circumstances we would happily remove may sometimes become classrooms in which Christ forms us. Patience can be learned there. Trust can be learned there. Forgiveness can be learned there. Courage can be learned there. Love can be learned there. Every day with Jesus contains another lesson in becoming like our Teacher.
What might Jesus be teaching you in the circumstances you are living through right now?
Jesus, I want to learn from You. Make me teachable. Use today’s circumstances to shape Your character within me. Teach me to think, speak, love and live increasingly like You. Amen.
