‘For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,’ declares the Lord. ‘As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.’
Here the Lord speaks with gentle rebuke and comfort: His thoughts are higher than ours, immeasurably so. The distance between heaven and earth is the measure of the distance between God’s mind and ours.
In a world fascinated with building “higher” levels of intelligence, whether through human progress, science, or AI, this passage reminds us of a boundary that cannot be crossed. Human reasoning can ascend far, but it cannot bridge the infinite gap to God’s wisdom.
And yet, in His mercy, God’s higher thoughts are not withheld from us. Through His word, His Spirit, and most of all through Christ, He reveals Himself. The One whose thoughts surpass us stoops to meet us. That is the wonder of grace, that the infinite intelligence of God chooses to communicate with finite people.
How does it change your perspective to know that God’s thoughts are immeasurably higher, yet He graciously reveals Himself to you?
Lord, I cannot fathom the height of your wisdom, yet you make yourself known to me. Thank you for speaking, revealing, and guiding me with your higher ways.
