19 My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 20 because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires. 21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.
Anger often moves faster than wisdom. We react before we understand, speak before we listen and assume before we ask.
James gives us a different rhythm: quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry. This does not mean ignoring injustice or avoiding difficult conversations. It means refusing to let anger take control of the moment.
Anger can alert us that something matters. But anger is a poor master. When it drives the conversation, our words can wound people we love and turn small disagreements into lasting divisions.
The narrow way creates space between the feeling and the response. In that space, we listen to God, listen to the other person and allow grace to shape our words.
A delayed response is not weakness. Sometimes it is evidence that the Holy Spirit, rather than anger, is directing us.
Where do I need to listen more carefully before responding?
Holy Spirit, slow me down. Help me listen with humility, speak with grace and respond with wisdom. May my reactions reflect the character of Jesus. Amen.
