A root is hidden, but its fruit eventually becomes visible. Hebrews warns us about a “bitter root” because unresolved hurt rarely remains contained.
Bitterness promises to protect us. It tells us that holding onto the offence will make sure the wrong is never forgotten. But bitterness does not imprison the person who hurt us; it imprisons us.
Over time, the original injury can become a whole way of living. We replay the conversation, rehearse what should have happened and allow resentment to deepen. The wound becomes an identity: “I am the person they betrayed. I am the one who was overlooked.”
Jesus offers another identity. We are people who have been loved, forgiven and made new. What happened to us may be part of our story, but it does not have to become the author of our future.
Have I been rehearsing an offence that God is asking me to release?
Father, search my heart and reveal every root of bitterness. I do not want yesterday’s pain to poison today’s relationships. Free me from resentment and lead me in Your grace. Amen.
