Faith Beyond What You Can See

Silence and stillness before God (2 minutes)
Scripture reading
Scripture reading:
John 20:24-29

24 Now Thomas (also known as Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!”
But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.”
26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”
28 Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!”
29 Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

Devotional

Thomas wanted evidence. He had heard the testimony of the other disciples, but grief and disappointment made belief difficult.

Jesus came to Thomas. He met him in his doubt and invited him to see. Thomas responded with one of the clearest confessions in the Gospel: “My Lord and my God!”

Doubt did not have to become Thomas’s destination. His questions became a meeting place with Jesus.

There comes a time, however, when we must move from investigation to trust. We will never possess every answer or see the whole road ahead. Faith entrusts what we cannot see to the One we have come to know.

Christian faith is not trust without reason. It is trust in a Person whose character has been revealed most clearly at the cross and resurrection.

Question to consider

Where is Jesus asking me to trust Him without seeing the entire road?

Prayer

My Lord and my God, meet me in my questions and lead me into trust. Help me take the next faithful step, even when I cannot see the whole journey. Amen.
