When Desire Takes the Wheel

Silence and stillness before God (2 minutes)
Scripture reading
Scripture reading:
James 1:13-15

13 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.

Devotional

Desire is part of being human. We desire food, relationship, meaning, intimacy, achievement and joy. Many desires are good gifts from God.

But desire becomes a road to ruin when it takes the wheel.

James describes temptation as a process. Desire draws us away, entices us and eventually gives birth to destructive choices. Ruin rarely begins with a dramatic decision. It often begins when a desire is repeatedly entertained, justified and fed.

We may tell ourselves, “I deserve this,” “Nobody will know,” or “This will finally satisfy me.” But desires make poor masters. They always demand more than they initially promise.

The narrow way begins by bringing our desires into the light. What is named can be surrendered. What is surrendered can be reordered by grace.

Question to consider

What desire has begun occupying more of my heart than it should?

Prayer

Father, You see every desire within me. Give me courage to bring them into Your light. Protect me from being drawn away and reorder my heart around what is good and true. Amen.
