A Deeper Delight

Scripture reading:
Psalm 37:3-5

3 Trust in the LORD and do good;
        dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.
     4 Take delight in the LORD,
        and he will give you the desires of your heart.

     5 Commit your way to the LORD;
        trust in him and he will do this...

Devotional

We often read “He will give you the desires of your heart” as though God promises to provide everything we already want.

But the verse begins, “Take delight in the Lord.”

As we delight in God, He reshapes our desires. We begin wanting what brings life rather than what merely offers immediate pleasure. God does not only satisfy our desires; He sanctifies them.

Sin usually offers a genuine longing a false solution. We seek comfort but choose escape. We seek love but settle for lust. We seek significance but chase applause. We seek security but cling to possessions.

God invites us beneath the surface: “What are you truly longing for?” At the deepest level, many of our desires are a longing for God—for His love, presence, goodness and peace.

Question to consider

What deeper longing may be hidden beneath one of my strongest desires?

Prayer

Lord, become the great delight of my heart. Purify what I want and teach me to seek satisfaction in You. Give me desires that lead toward life. Amen.
