…I lack nothing.
If the Lord is our Shepherd, then we can live without fear of lack. David’s words are not a denial of hardship, he knew hunger, danger, and grief. Yet he declares that with God as Shepherd, he lacks nothing essential. God’s care is complete. He knows what His sheep need and provides faithfully.
This does not mean every desire will be met. It means that no true need will go unmet. The Shepherd knows better than the sheep. He leads us to what sustains life, even when our cravings would lead us elsewhere. Sometimes His provision looks different than what we expected, but it is always perfect.
Contentment flows from this trust. To say, “I lack nothing” is to rest in God’s sufficiency. Amidst all of the perceived dissatisfaction of life the Shepherd invites us into peace. When Christ is our Shepherd, our hearts are freed from restless striving. He Himself ise nough.
Where are you most tempted to feel that you are lacking something? How might trust in the Shepherd change your perspective?
Lord, teach me to say with confidence, “I lack nothing.” Free me from restlessness and striving. Help me find contentment in your perfect care.
