You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.
The imagery changes from field to feast. The Shepherd becomes the Host, preparing a table for His guest. Yet notice the setting: not in times of ease, but in the very presence of enemies. While threats linger, God provides abundance.
This is the confidence of faith. God’s care is not postponed until all danger is gone, He sustains us in the midst of it. Enemies may surround, but they cannot stop the Shepherd from providing. His presence turns battlegrounds into banquet halls.
The table speaks of fellowship. To sit at God’s table is to share intimacy with Him, even under threat. In Christ, this is fulfilled at the Lord’s Supper, where we remember His victory over sin and death. There, we taste the feast of grace set before us, a meal that enemies cannot touch.
Where has God sustained you “in the presence of enemies”— providing peace even when trouble remained?
Lord, thank you that you prepare a table for me even in the midst of opposition. Help me to feast on your goodness and not be overcome by fear.
