You anoint my head with oil…
In the ancient world, anointing a guest’s head with oil was a sign of honour, joy, and blessing. David pictures God not only as Shepherd and Host but as One who delights in His people. He does not merely feed us; He honours us.
Shepherds also used oil to protect and heal their sheep—keeping pests away and soothing wounds. Both images reveal God’s generous care. He is not content with bare provision; He pours out abundance. He is not distant or grudging but attentive and tender.
For believers, this points to the Spirit’s anointing. God pours out His Spirit on His children, marking them as His own and filling them with His presence. To be anointed is to be chosen, loved, and empowered. The Shepherd does not only meet needs—He blesses with Himself.
How does it change your view of God to think of Him as a Host who not only provides but also honours and blesses you?
Father, thank you for anointing me with your Spirit. Heal my wounds, mark me as your own, and fill me with the joy of your presence.
