27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
Inordinate and unchecked sexual desire will get you into trouble. This is the type of living which is driven by the body, rather than the mind controlled by the Spirit. Jesus continues to develop his great thesis on how to live the life God designed us to live in the kingdom of the heavens fuelled by God’s amazing grace.
The law taught the people of God not to commit adultery. But the life of God in the soul of a human being produces a higher grade of righteousness than this. Jesus suggests that the adultery comes from somewhere. Adultery is a fruit of a tree who’s roots have been allowed to dig deep into the soil of a person’s heart. Adultery was first birthed in lustful looking which stored memories and desires in the hidden places of the heart.
Following Jesus is a journey which begins in the heart. As born again people we are spiritual beings driven and directed by the alignment and posture of our heart. There is nothing more important than our hearts. As Proverbs 4:23 says “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
How healthy is your spiritual heart today? How might the light of Christ’s love and grace shine truth into every corner of your heart?
Father, thank you for the immeasurable worth you have endowed to every human being as an image bearer of God. Help me to always see people as you see them, without a hint of objectification. Please help me to comprehend the importance of my heart. Teach me Lord to guard my heart as the well spring of my life. Amen.
