Scripture reading:
Matthew 6:22-24

22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eyes are unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
24 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

Devotional

Sometimes people find the Christian faith, the bible, even God himself a little boring, a little ‘so so’. I would contend that unquestionably if this is your testimony, you have allowed something else to captivate your heart—100%. The God who created the universe is categorically not boring, it’s actually impossible for this to be the case. Which is a great discovery to make. Do a heart check and find out what you’re treasuring. Remove it and allow the living God and His son the King of Kings, Lord of Lords, saviour of the world, the Lord Jesus Christ to fill your heart’s vision again.

Jesus says, heart-sight (in contrast to eyesight) is super important. If the eyes of your heart are not focussed on the correct treasure, then hearts can get pretty dark. And you can’t serve two masters. Jesus even highlights that which is often in competition with God - money. You can’t serve God and money - pick one - and let it be the living God.

These treasures you’re storing up are not just for a far off time in heaven after you die. The kingdom of the heavens is among us, so part of the treasures we store up aren’t far off either. Treasure’s in heaven must be God himself, so somehow, wonderfully, if we have stored up treasure in heaven, those treasures can be accessed now to do the good works we’ve been called to accomplish. Store up treasure in heaven to do good on earth!

Question to consider

Do you serve the master of money? Talk to God about it.

Prayer

Dear Lord, forgive me I pray for the times when I have allowed the pursuit of money to become an idol. You have taught me in your word that I need to be careful what I fix my eyes on. Help me to understand that ideas will shape the course of my life. I want the central idea of my life to be based on the coming of your kingdom in word and deed. I want to serve the one true God, you are my God. In Jesus’ name, amen.
