Silence and stillness before God (2 minutes)
Scripture reading
Scripture reading:
Matthew 5:1-3

1 Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2 and he began to teach them.

He said:

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Devotional

The Sermon on the Mount, though a piece of literary genius, has been the source of great interpretive consternation. Christians have struggled with the simple question: is it doable? In other words, is Jesus talking about a way of living that can only be expected post the second coming and inauguration of the consummated kingdom of God on a new Earth or is this a plausible expectation for the now? It’s our contention that the latter is the truth. The Sermon on the Mount is Jesus’ description of what life in the kingdom of the heavens is like. Through faith in Christ, the kingdom has come near and it is a radically different way of living available for all who are born again and filled with the Spirit of the living God.

The Kingdom of God or the Kingdom of Heaven (same thing) is really what Jesus was on about. The King of the Kingdom (Jesus) was walking around on earth, God in human flesh and where the King went the kingdom came in power. That’s why the text says people were getting healed of all kinds of illnesses and diseases, even demon possession. The Kingdom of God was being unleashed and this kingdom was bringing transformation to people’s lives.

Question to consider

If it is true for you today that by faith in Christ, yours is the kingdom of heaven, how does this change the way you go about your day today?

Prayer

Dear Lord Jesus, thank you for demonstrating what true humanity looks like. You are the good king and you brought the kingdom of God to earth in fullness. Please help me throughout the weeks to come, to listen to your voice, obey your voice and learn to be your voice of grace and truth to this world. Thank you for offering the good life of the kingdom to me by faith, may I partake of it as I should, in Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
