Matthew 5:14-16

Silence and stillness before God (2 minutes)
Scripture reading
Scripture reading:
Matthew 5:14-16

14 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Devotional

Wherever we go as Christians, we are called to make a difference like a light being turned on in a dark place. Lights are of little use if not placed amidst the darkness. A light hidden under a bowl is of no use at all. Jesus, by way of the most obvious metaphor available is saying, make a difference in my name. It’s the way of the master, we are “difference makers."

Verse 16, Jesus explains that the service of our lives to help others, to give guidance, protection, leadership and revelation; all things that light does, is the natural outcome of living a life empowered by the Spirit. And this type of life is missional, it’s evangelistic, people will see how you live and through the witness of our kingdom lifestyle, our sacrificial servanthood, people will be drawn to the king of the kingdom themselves. They will see your good deeds and turn around and give glory to God themselves.

Question to consider

What is stopping the light of your life from shining as a witness to the power of the gospel?

Prayer

Dear Lord, I have allowed your light to grow dim in my life. Guilt, shame, disobedience and apathy, laziness, selfishness, greed and fear have all played a role in dimming the light of witness in my life. Lord, thank you today for the grace of Jesus. You have declared that I am the light of the world in Christ. May I take a hold of this truth firmly grounded in the reality of the gospel. In Jesus’ name, may your love, peace, joy and hope shine through my life like a light on hill this day. Amen.
