Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’
The writer of Hebrews offers a simple but searching command: keep your life free from the love of money. The antidote is not austerity but contentment—trusting that what God provides is enough. At the heart of this command lies a promise: Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.
Materialism feeds on fear—fear of not having enough, fear of being left alone, fear of falling behind. God answers those fears not with more possessions but with His presence. What we need most is not wealth but the assurance that He will never abandon us.
Breaking free from materialism requires more than willpower; it requires anchoring our hearts in God’s faithful presence. When we know He is with us, we can loosen our grip on possessions. His presence is our true security; His promise is our lasting wealth.
How might practising contentment this week help you rest in God’s presence rather than the pursuit of more?
Faithful God, thank you that you will never leave me nor forsake me. Teach me contentment in your presence, and keep my life free from the love of money.
