So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.
Materialism doesn’t only grip us through greed, it grips us through worry. Jesus names the everyday anxieties that consume people: food, drink, clothing. These are real needs, but when worry dominates, we live as though God is absent. Jesus gently reminds us: your Father knows what you need.
The world chases after more, but disciples are called to seek first the kingdom. This doesn’t mean neglecting practical needs, it means trusting God with them while making His reign our priority. When His kingdom comes first, material things find their proper place.
Breaking free from materialism often begins with learning to rest. To stop running after what everyone else runs after, and to trust the Father who provides. Worry is replaced with worship, striving with seeking. The antidote to materialism is not indifference but confidence in God’s care.
What worries about provision most distract you, and how can you entrust them to your heavenly Father?
Father, thank you that you know my needs. Free me from worry, and teach me to seek your kingdom first. Help me to trust your provision each day.
