Jesus looked at him and loved him. ‘One thing you lack,’ he said. ‘Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.’ At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.
The rich young ruler wanted eternal life, but his wealth held his heart. Jesus looked at him with love and put His finger on the one thing he could not release: his possessions. The man walked away sad—not because Jesus rejected him, but because he could not let go of his treasure.
This encounter reveals how materialism grips us. Wealth promises security and identity, but it can keep us from surrendering fully to Christ. The tragedy is not that the man had possessions, but that his possessions had him.
Jesus invites us to freedom: let go, follow me, gain treasure in heaven. For some, that may mean radical giving; for all, it means refusing to let wealth be the measure of our worth. Breaking free means recognising that what we cling to most tightly often becomes our greatest obstacle to following Jesus.
What might Jesus be asking you to loosen your grip on so that you can follow Him more freely?
Jesus, thank you that you look at me with love. Show me what I need to release, and give me courage to treasure you above all else.
