1) SPIRIT/HEART/WILL
At the executive centre of the human person is their spirit—also known as the heart or will. Apart from Christ, the human spirit is "dead in transgressions" (Ephesians 2:1) but is "born again" by the regeneration of the Holy Spirit (John 3:3). Setting our hearts on things above is a daily choice (Colossians 3:1).
2) MIND (THINKING & FEELING)
The mind is where thoughts and emotions generate. Choosing where to direct your conscious attention is the first and most basic freedom a person has (Philippians 4:8). In the Way of Jesus, the renewal of the mind is of paramount importance because the actions of the body flow from the fullness of the mind (Romans 12:2).
3) BODY
The body is the power pack God gave us to live in. It's the place where discipleship happens. Though sinful habits are deeply embedded in our bodies, the Holy Spirit tranforms us over time as we practice the spiritual disciplines in the midst of everyday trials (see the Golden Triangle).
4) SOCIAL CONTEXT
Human beings never live in isolation; we live in community, and the context around us shapes us deeply.
5) THE SOUL
As Tim Mackie states in his BibleProject teaching on the soul, we do not have a soul, we are a soul. The soul is the integrated self that God breathes life into.
