And from that time on Saul kept a close eye on David.
Saul had everything: a crown, a kingdom, and the calling of God. But when David began to rise, Saul’s heart couldn’t celebrate — it grew suspicious. Jealousy turned to bitterness, and bitterness turned to obsession.
Bitterness will always steal joy. Saul couldn’t enjoy his reign anymore because he was consumed with watching David. He feared being outshone, outdone, or forgotten.
Jesus shows us another way — the way of downward mobility. He humbled Himself, served others, and rejoiced when others were lifted up. In the kingdom of God, there is no scarcity of honour.
Envy is often the quiet beginning of bitterness. But we can catch it early. Instead of comparison, we can choose contentment. Instead of resentment, we can choose to rejoice with others.
Where has envy crept into your heart? How can you begin to practice contentment and gratitude today?
Loving God, you’ve given me so much — help me to see it clearly. Free me from envy, and grow in me a heart that celebrates others without fear. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
